Application
A marquetry facing is applied with the same method that any veneered panel would be produced.
For flat panel applications we recommend hot or cold pressing marquetry. This process has the same requirements as laminating regular veneer.
Vacuum pressing or using contact adhesive is not advisable with a raw veneer marquetry skin due to
lamination concerns. If this is the process you intend to use, we highly suggest 2 of 3 plying the veneer in a hot press.
If you do not have the expertise or capability we can provide your face laminated to a substrate.
Case Cleaning (sanding)
The tape we use for assembly is removed after the face is applied to the substrate.
There are two schools of thought on how to remove the tape.
1. Sweat the tape.
As the tape has a water soluble adhesive, you can use water to remove it. This method is beneficial as you are sanding the veneer skin less, and it reduces the chances for thin veneer or sand through. The downside is that you are introducing moisture into the panel. If over done you can potentially warp thin panels, make certain veneers bleed color and soften some glues that are used to laminate the veneer. We find if you use a moist cloth, apply the moisture only to the tape and are patient in letting the tape soften.. This method works very well. Just keep in mind, DO NOT SOAK THE PANEL WITH WATER.
2. Sand the tape.
Many woodworkers will tell you to sand the tape, and we agree this method is preferable. However sanding a marquetry panel takes finesse. If you are not experienced or cautious you will find that you will quickly sand through right next to the tape. Our advice: Do not rush, don’t sand too much in one spot, NEVER EVER turn your sander on edge and pay close attention.
If do not feel qualified or comfortable with doing either option.. We can remove the tape and prep sand the work for you.
Finishing
Marquetry panels are finished with the same methods as any wood panels would require. There are some techniques for dark finish that we can recommend that keep the contrast in the inlay woods. Contact Corey if you are interested.
We do not currently offer wood finishing.
