Custom Dragonfly for David K.
This marquetry piece was made from cherry (background), olive ash, satinwood, pearwood, kingwood, rosewood and maple.
We used a sand shading technique to give the body and the eyes a three dimensional effect. The wings were laser engraved and infilled with walnut putty. Then we used a very light stain to two tone finish the cherry background, leaving the wings a natural clear color for a subtle contrast. We also randomly stained some of the individual window panes of the wing to add to the detail.
The shelving unit was made from soft maple with dadoed cross lap joints and had a vein line on the top of the shelves to keep the pictures from sliding from the shelves. We finished the unit with a 20 sheen black lacquer and we sander sealed used 2 coats black and two coats clear.
