Installing a medallion in a new wood floor.

Step #1

Choose the location that your medallion will be placed. On the sub floor draw lines to locate the center of the medallion. Line up the installation template so the etched lines line up with the lines that you have drawn on the sub floor. Then trace around the inside of the template so that the shape of the medallion is drawn on the sub floor. Remove the template and set aside.

Step#2

Install flooring per manufacturer's instructions. Make sure flooring overlaps the medallion shape you traced on the floor by aprox 1/2 to 1" and assure that none of the nails you use to install the floor come too close to the where the medallion is to be installed. Sand the floor in the area of the medallion to assure the template will sit flush to the newly intalled flooring.

Step #3

Line up the template back to the center lines you traced and temporarily fasten the template to the floor. Assure that the template covers the flooring you have installed.

Step #4

Equip your router with a collar that is 1/8th of an inch larger than the bit you are to use and set the depth to route 3/16 of the flooring at a pass. Route around the inside of the template until you have routed flush to the sub floor. Remove the router template and save it for your next project.

Step #5

Test fit the medallion should fit snugly into the hole that you routed and be very close to flush with the rest of the floor*. Apply flooring adhesive into the hole that you routed and spread evenly. Place the medallion and weight with something that is heavy and distributes the weight evenly. Bags of sand or concrete work well. Let the glue cure for the per the manufacturer's instructions.

    * Note: Larger medallions could warp slightly before installation if they have not been kept in a humidity controlled environment. If this is the case you can use a circular saw to make relief cuts aproxamitely 3/8" deep and spaced 1-2" apart on the back side of the medallion. When the medallion is weighted it should flatten out.

Step #6

The medallion can be sanded and finished with the same method as the rest of your flooring. Care for our product the same as you normally would care for a wood floor.
